Now, I will begin by saying that almost everyone in Puerto Vallarta and all the cool little towns around the Bay of Banderas has a secret taco spot where the make the best taco’s on the bay. But trust me, if you want to get on the express train to the best of the best tacos in the entire Puerto Vallarta area, maybe on the face of the earth, I am your new best friend.
For me, to deliver the best taco experience in Puerto Vallarta, a taqueria needs not only amazing hand-made tortillas, but the right balance of funky and foodie. Open kitchen, cement floor, plastic tables and chairs and smiling waitresses walking by with plates that are heaven sent.
Some taco joints do the Baskin-Robbins thing and offer 31 varieties but not "Tacos Mar y Tierra", on the main drag & Francia in Versalles across from Coppel on the main road . It’s open air, totally unpretentious and unassuming, considering they have the best tacos anywhere. They do pescado, that’s fish and they do carne, that’s meat. 4 of each. Taco size or quesadilla, a larger size. Other than juice and sodas, that’s it. They come with a nice little side of super fresh salad veggies. I would take three buses and two cabs and walk a mile if I had to, for one of their shrimp tacos. I usually have 3.
In a food world full of endless experiments and new territories, it is great to find a place where perfection and repetition go together. I’ll take a handmade taco filled with camarón, (shrimp) fresh red onion and radishes with a little squirt of lime anytime, over some Wolfgang Puck foie gras, yuppified creation. That would be like painting a mustache on the Mona Lisa.
Another thing I love about this place is that the women who work there, all own it, maybe that is why there is such pride in what they do and how they do it. Come hungry, leave happy. You will love it.
